Almost

Josh and I worked on his patio cover all day yesterday and came oh so close to finishing the job. We lack one run of roofing (decided to go with rolled roofing at half the price, plus the other covers in the neighborhood have rolled roofing) and the aluminum flashing that keeps rain from running down the wall of the house into the patio area.

Jan and I attend a class on Wednesday nights, so I had to stop at 6:00. As it turned out, we made it to class just in time to leave on a first call (pick up a body).

Now … as tempted as I am to simply ignore all the snide remarks made in yesterday’s comments in a sleezy attempt at defamation of my character, I will make a few comments just to clear the air.

The roof of the cover is actually sloped a bit more than required by code.

I do know north from south and east from west. However, since this is NOT my house and there is only one side of this house that is considered the back side, that becomes a mute point. If I ever need to know direction, I can simply pull up the compass app on my iPhone and find out just which way I’m facing! Besides, this house sits in a cul-de-sac, so none of them are facing true any direction.

Generally speaking, though, the south end of a house is usually on the ground and the north end up there around the roof area … right?!

Vertical and horizontal did not figure into this project as I already knew where the boards had to go and which direction they needed to go.

Hopefully we can put up the final piece of roofing and seal off where the patio cover connects to the house (a horizontal connection, by the way Mrs. Attorney in Mississippi! -:) We have about a 60% chance of rain on Saturday and Saturday is the next opportunity we’ll have to finish this phase of the project. Unless … we can leave the mortuary a little early this afternoon and get it done before friends arrive tonight for dinner and to spend the night with us.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working on this with my son.

I’m not nearly as young as I once was!

You are the rock and roll roofin’ man, no matter what any of these other dead beats on this site say!!!
    Peace.

[Let the deadbeats be mute. Or moot.]

Yep, it sucks to not be as young as we used to be (I have quit using that word as much as possible…but sometimes it is just a necessary evil)

    [Which word ... "young"?]

It looks like you and Josh did a bang-up job, good Buddy!

[We built it to stand a few years. Thing is, years ago when I tried to teach Josh some basic skills in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, auto mechanics, he had no interest. Today, having to pay someone to do all of that, he regrets it ... a little. Heather regrets it a LOT.]

    Greg, Greg, Greg -

You & I are the best of friends. How could you EVER think I would say anything “snide” toward you or at your expense. Truly. Not intentionally, anyway. I was just pointing out a couple of things that I, at least, thought were of importance to the subject (i.e., horizontal/vertical, directions, etc).

Therefore, if I have (1) hurt your feelings, (2) caused you any angst in any way, (3) made you consider suing me for defamation, I hereby apologize for 1 & 2 publicly, and as for #3, recant any defamatory statements on my part.

In fact, the answers you gave above were not only brilliant but hilarious! Quick thinking on your part!! Thus, you get an A+ for your decisive comeback from the comments of yesterday.

    Yet . . . having said all of that . . . (and I really CAN’T help myself here) . . . I just HAVE to point out one very teeny-tiny small mis-usage of a word in today’s post.

It would not be a “mute” point (see above), but a “moot” point. Although I’m sure you would love for ME to be mute for a while. One reason I know this & the difference in the two words is because (as you so kindly pointed out and remembered in today’s post) I learned it in law school while studying to become a renowned, widely-respected New Orleans attorney. (The widely respected part was because none of the guys thought I acted like a typical “Femi-Nazi” aggressive, bullish, radically polarizing woman “laww-yeer.” In fact, they all found me quite amenable and agreeable in my practice of law, my first boss even telling me I was too “soft” to be an attorney. . .Although, you might beg to differ.)

The reason I know the word “moot” so well is because we had to write briefs and defend them in Moot Court our first year of law school. And, believe me, when I was through in there, the professors all thought that I was rather moot! ;-)

I hope y’all can get it all finished today. That would be wonderful! We’d also like to see a photo of the finished project. I’m really astounded that you’ve gotten so much work done on it so quickly, knowing as how sometimes your home improvement projects (and others) tend to drag on for some length of time. (Oops. Sorry for the slip-up there. I think I’m going to have to give up being “snide” for Lent.)

Of course, you still have the electrical wiring & fixtures to to do, plus fan.

Just one question still unanswered (which I did NOT raise, although I was thinking of it and it DOES seem pretty important). What about the fire pit under the patio cover? Is that NOT dangerous? We just use ours out on our deck with a concrete pad under it. (They are terrific! You can buy them at Lowe’s and they look similar in size to the plastic floor protectors you put under desks so your chair can roll around.)

We bought a really neat little propane fire pit on a stand to use in our back porch on cool days, but it is very small and not a hazard. We LOVE it, though. Gives off a good amount of heat and we can sit and visit out there with friends.

Cheers! And, many blessings to you all today! Dee

[Yes, Dee, we are the best of friends ... therefore if I take any legal action against you, please don't take it personally!!

I knew when I used the word mute that it was not correct. I just didn't have time to look up the correct word. As for the fire pit ... they don't use it and are planning on taking it out and filling the hole with concrete. Problem is their concrete has a colored tint to it and we would not be able to match it.]

Awwww, Greg. I’m sorry. Really. I’ve been mean to you, haven’t I. I repent. Sincerely. And promise to leave you alone. At least for a while. As long as I can stand it.

In other words, I’ll be “mute.”

    Dee

[By the way, thank you SO MUCH for the card you sent. It came at a good time and was very meaningful! Much love to you and Tom.]

For some reason all I can muster up is an “et al.” :)

[Some days an "et al" is better than nothing.]

Can you and Josh come see me in Texas for a couple of weeks? I have all sorts of little home repair jobs I need done :)

Glad you got the project finished, looks great….and all the comments made for some great reading and entertainment.

BTW, I finally answered the second part of your comment on my blog. Be sure and check it out. :)

My son and I bonded over our restoration of his 74 Gran Torino. It was a precious time; deeply meaningful to me. And I didn’t have a certain attorney in a certain Southern state hassling me. Which means, I guess, that God likes me more than He likes you.

It sure looks easier that installing a body lift in a mortuary’s 500 degree attic. I too envy the weather. Looking forward to hot days in Bama!!
